Marlin Perkins

Director Emeritus
St. Louis Zoo

His zoo career began at the St. Louis Zoo and then took him to the Buffalo Zoo in New York as curator. Perkins next step was a zoo director at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo where he would serve from 1944 – 1962. After Lincoln Park he returned to his home in St. Louis to become director of the zoo. He is probably best known to the public for his appearances on the long running television show Zoo Parade & Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Television made him a household name. He was the only zoo director to be featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1947.

I knew that television was radio you could see.”
