Steve started his career as an animal keeper at the Kansas City Zoo (1967–1970). His next opportunity came when he took the position as Assistant Curator of Birds at the Philadelphia Zoo. This position gave him the opportunity for field experience in Ecuador, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. He later moved to St. Louis to take the position of Curator of Birds and later Deputy General Curator. In 1985, the position of director at the Oklahoma City Zoo became available and Steve was offered the position. After he retired in 2000 he continued in the field as a consultant to the Fresno Zoo and Kansas City Zoo.
